Search engines were developed to meet a basic need that emerged as the internet grew. The internet is a huge pool of information filled with billions of web pages. Without search engines, reaching this information would be like digging a well with a needle. Search engines follow a general working principle.

how search engines work

What Are the Steps of How Search Engines Work?

Like every system, search engines have their own working methodology:

Spiders (Crawlers) and Crawling:

Search engines use programs called spiders or bots to regularly find new and updated pages in the enormous mass of information on the web.

These spiders start from seed URLs and move on to other pages by following the links found on those pages.

By constantly crawling the web this way, spiders reach new information and add it to the database.

Indexing:

Once crawling is complete, the information collected by the spiders is added to the search engine’s index.

The index is similar to a library catalog. It shows which information is located at which URL.

During indexing, the page title, subheadings, keywords, meta tags and other important information are recorded.

Ranking Algorithm:

When users enter a query, the search engine scans billions of pages in its index within seconds and finds the results most relevant to the query.

Large search engines such as Google may consider more than 200 factors to determine how a page ranks.

These factors include many characteristics such as the page content, how valuable the page is to users, the number and quality of internal and external links, the user’s geographic location and mobile-friendliness.

User behavior, such as how much time users spend on a page and whether they leave it immediately (bounce rate), also plays an important role in the ranking algorithm.

Displaying the Results (SERP – Search Engine Results Page):

The algorithm evaluates all these factors and displays the most relevant results in ranked order.

Special result blocks such as ads, local results, news and videos may also appear on the SERP.

Websites should be optimized for search engines (SEO – Search Engine Optimization). This means arranging a site’s content, structure and other technical features so that search engines can understand it more easily and index it correctly. Content structure is very important for SEO, and delivering the right information to users is just as important for search engines.

The goal of search engine optimization is to help a website achieve a high position in search engine rankings, which usually means more traffic and therefore more customers or readers. In this context, it is also very important to know how search engines work.
