Creating an SEO-focused content brief is essential for producing high-quality content that drives organic traffic and meets your content marketing goals.

This step-by-step guide will help you create a comprehensive SEO content brief that aligns your content strategist, writing team and stakeholders.

1. Understand Your Target Audience

Before creating an SEO content brief, you need a clear understanding of your target audience. Define their demographics, pain points and search intent.

Think about what your audience is looking for and how your content can provide value. This will guide your content creation process and make your content resonate with readers, ultimately improving your rankings in the SERPs.

You can use Ahrefs’ “search intent” feature for this. Below I share how to use it.

How to Use Ahrefs Search Intent

  1. Open Ahrefs Keywords Explorer and search for your keyword. As an example, I chose the keyword “SEO.”

  1. Click “Identify intents” in the SERP overview section. This shows you users’ average search intents as percentages.

  1. After analyzing users’ search intent, you can plan your long-tail keyword targeting based both on the content you’ll offer (for example, whether you want to offer an SEO service or share information about SEO) and on what users pay attention to on average.

2. Keyword Research

Keyword research is crucial for identifying the target keyword and related keywords that will drive your content strategy. Using a keyword research tool to find search terms with high search volume and low competition will help you reach your goal more easily.

This research helps you understand what your audience is searching for and how to optimize your content for search engines, so it appears for relevant queries. For example, below is how the keyword “seo tips” looks in Ahrefs for the United States.

3. Define the Purpose and Goals of the Content

customer journey

Above, I shared the hierarchical stages of a content strategy for an e-commerce site. These stages can apply to blog content as well. It’s worth stating the purpose and goals of the content clearly in your brief.

What do you want to achieve with this content? Whether it’s increasing organic traffic, educating your audience or driving conversions, a clear goal will guide content creation and keep your writers — or you, if you’re writing — on the same track as your users. For example, effective content addresses the needs and pain points of specific users or buyers, which in turn brings you conversions.

4. Create a Detailed Content Outline

A good brief includes a detailed content outline. Break the main topic into subtopics and add headings and subheadings to structure the content. This helps writers understand the flow of the piece and ensures all key points are covered.

For example, if you’re writing about “how to use Facebook marketing,” your outline might include sections such as “Creating a Facebook Ad,” “Targeting the Right Audience” and “Measuring Ad Performance.” This structure helps you create content that covers the topic in depth.

5. Define On-Page SEO Elements

Be sure to include on-page SEO elements such as the meta title, meta description, URL slug and headings in your brief. These elements are critical for optimization and help search engines understand your content’s context.

For example, your meta title should be a short summary of the content that includes the primary keyword. Also, to increase visibility, consider what “people also ask” and add answers to those questions in your content. After searching for your keyword, you can use the “People Also Ask” section on Google’s results page. For example, when I search Google for SEO, the following results appear:

6. Define Content Length and Format

Define the ideal word count and content format in your brief. Word count should be based on your keyword research and competitor analysis. Whether it’s a blog post, a listicle, a case study or a social media post, consider the content type and length that best suits the topic. Making sure your content is comprehensive enough will help it perform better in the SERPs.

Use your target keyword naturally. Google doesn’t use a fixed “ideal” keyword density, but as a rough guide many writers keep it around 1–2.5%. Repeating keywords meaninglessly and back to back (keyword stuffing) can lead to a penalty from Google.

To calculate keyword distribution in your article, you can use the “Content Audit Tool“ on my website (currently available in Turkish).

7. Provide Internal and External Links

Internal links help build topic clusters and keep readers engaged with your site. Specify which internal links should be included and the preferred anchor text. You can also add high-quality external links to trustworthy sources while avoiding competitors’ content. This step is very important for content optimization and improving your site’s navigation flow.

8. Include Style and Brand Guidelines

Include your style guide in the brief to make sure your content matches your brand voice. This helps freelance writers or your in-house team understand your brand’s tone and style, ensuring consistency across all content. You can define it as the writing or content tone — for example, the content should be written in a friendly tone, a formal tone, a marketing tone and so on.

9. Outline the Call to Action (CTA)

A call to action (CTA) plays a very important role for users. Every piece of content should include a clear call to action. Define the CTA in your brief according to the content’s purpose and the audience’s stage in the customer journey. Whether it’s subscribing to a newsletter, downloading a guide or making a purchase, the CTA should be clear and compelling and guide searchers toward the desired action.

10. Plan for Revisions and Feedback

A good content brief should include a plan for revisions. Outline how the feedback process will work and set expectations for the number of revisions. This ensures the final output meets your standards and aligns with your original intent. The writing process usually involves creating a first draft, gathering feedback and making the necessary adjustments.

11. Use a Content Brief Template

Using a content brief template can streamline your workflow. A template ensures consistency and, if you have a team, helps them create briefs for different pieces quickly. The template should include sections for target audience, keywords, content outline, on-page SEO elements, internal and external links, word count and style guidelines. This process is essential for maintaining efficiency and consistency.

Creating an effective SEO content brief is key to producing high-quality content that ranks well in search results and meets your content marketing goals. By following these steps, you can keep your content team aligned, leading to a smooth creation process and better final results.

An effective brief streamlines the entire content creation process, from planning to execution, and helps your SEO work grow faster with a successful content marketing strategy. Knowing your customers’ or users’ journey helps you understand what’s on their minds and what they need. Creating content with this strategy will help you choose the most effective internal links and CTAs at the brief stage.
